Every Breath You Take: A True Story of Obsession, Revenge, and Murder – Ann Rule

Damn-it, I know I keep saying I’m not going to read any more Ann Rule books, but then they catch my eye at the library, and I can’t fucking help myself! This book is 681 pages, and it took me a long ass time to read! The family and I drove to Texas 2 weeks ago and drove back on Saturday, so I spent a lot of the time that I was in the passenger seat reading.

This book was tragic and fucked up. Being married to an abusive spouse would be hard enough, but getting divorced and remarried and still have to endure abuse from him? Ugh. Poor Sheila. All I could think of the last part of the book were her poor kids who had to grow up without a mom. And 2 of who had to live knowing that their bio father was responsible. It’s all horrific.

I googled the case to see more pictures, and read that Allen died in prison in 2014. I’m sure that’s a small comfort to those who loved Sheila.

For real tho, this is my last Ann Rule book for awhile!

This is the 2nd book of the Players Game Series. As you know, I really liked Book 1, and I’m glad Rachel continued the story and we got to find out what happened to Miller after Emerson and Sanchez got together. Oh Sanchez….I would talk about my love for Sanchez more, but this book wasn’t really about him – though he’s around.

I really liked Kinsey and Miller in Fraternize, and I was glad they got together. I like the bickering will they/won’t they chemistry that Rachel has written into them. This book really made me a fan of Rachel’s. – Like I went back to the library and got her other books that they had there.

As funny as parts of this book were, it also made me bawl. There was a lot of real life going down in the pages. And sometimes, real life sucks.

I was happy that it was also the story of Jax and Harley, it was a sweet and sometimes frustrating bonus to see how Jax’s story goes!

Get some tissues before you read this!

Misadventures with The Boss – Kendall Ryan

So, I found another Misadventures book at the Library! This is my 2nd one in the series I’ve read. They are complete standalones, so they can be read in absolutely any order. I read Book 5 first. This one was just as hot as that one!

This is the first book that I’ve read by Kendall Ryan – though as I searched through my kindle app to see if I’d read anything else, I have several books on there! I’ll have to move them up the TBR list!

I instantly loved the chemistry between Piper and Jackson. It made me a little sad that I’ve never used a dating app! Hahahaha.  And even though it is a “my boss” book, it was sweet and Jackson wasn’t a dominating asshole.  Sometimes it’s nice that the man is just a good guy from the beginning (even if he’s an alpha, I don’t think he ever strayed into that asshole space) and doesn’t need redemption. Lucky for us, Jackson may be a good guy, but he’s pretty dirty when it counts! 😉

Pretty Little Killers – Rita Herron

Another Library book! We’ve been hitting up the library quite a bit lately, and I really like paper books a lot more than reading on my phone, so I’ve been grabbing more and more library books for me.

I’m really iffy about this book. I really liked parts of it, and other parts not so much. The whole book reminded me a lot of the plot of The Blacklist, really. Even though it was nothing like the show. It had that same feel to it.

The vigilante killing of people who deserved to die. I liked it. I liked the fact that it was happening. And I was really kind of irritated that Korine and whiny Hatcher were trying to stop/solve these murders. Ha.

Whiny Hatcher…. that’s what I want to call him. He lied to Korine about being married (albeit separated) , but then seems to take it out on her that he didn’t answer the wives phone call when she needed him. He’s really an ass, I think.

I didn’t realize this had a romance(ish) substory line when I grabbed it off the shelf. And, I would have liked the book a whole lot better as a whole if it hadn’t. I liked the mystery part, and I was totally shocked at how/why Korine’s dad died. But, trying to put Korine and Hatcher into some sort of relationship irritated me. They are attracted to each other, but he’s an ass, why would she put up with that? I don’t know. It just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe that was the point of it? I’m not sure.

I really like Rita’s writing, and though this is the first book of hers, it won’t be the last. In fact, getting the link to the amazon product page I saw that this was the first book in a series. I will definitely read the next book!

The Dead Key – D.M. Pulley

The Dead Key

Find it on Amazon – It’s even on Kindle Unlimited!

Of course, this cover caught my eye at the library. I’m so into covers, I mean really. I know it shouldn’t be a factor, but a well done cover just makes me happy and more into wanting to read the book!

I really liked this book! This is the first book that I’ve read by D.M. Pulley, and as I was finding the picture for the post, I saw that there are 2 other books in KU! The stories of Beatrice and Iris and their experiences was so well thought out and executed! How things were connected over a period of 20 years and how they were working together, was so well done!

Poor Beatrice! I mean, at 16 years old I didn’t handle anything well, and she was so smart she did what the police and the FBI could never do!  And, as Iris felt like she was losing her mind, I felt the same way! D.M. really pulled me in and I could feel the emotions that Iris was feeling and the paranoia that kicked in.  – You’re not being paranoid if someone is really fucking with you!

I was surprised exactly how the ending worked itself out, and I had mixed emotions about how things went!

I worked at a few banks years ago, and maybe that is why I was drawn into the story so much too. It has really made me wonder what for real happens to safe-deposit boxes when they are defaulted on!

I’m looking forward to reading the other books that D.M. has written. They are going on my TBR!

Farm Fresh Murder: A Farmers’ Market Mystery – Paige Shelton

Farm Fresh Murder

Find it on Amazon

This series caught my eye at the library! I know, not a romance novel or a true crime?! It’s a miracle… Not really, I do love a mystery.

I didn’t know Farmers’ Markets were so exciting! In fact, murder aside, I never even thought what must go in to running or having a booth at a market. Having to haul all your stuff back and forth. Being out in the elements. I don’t think that having a stall at a farmers’ market would be for me. But, I know next time I go, I’ll be thinking more about what goes into getting the fresh foods and goodies.

Poor Becca, she just can’t help herself. I understand the wanting to help a friend, but who wants to be shot at while doing so!? Not me. Ha. I did appreciate Becca though. The fact that she’s been married and is a little cynical. The fact that she finds a love interest in a younger man. I think she’s fabulous and someone I’d like to be friends with. — Maybe, as most series’ go along, bad things always happen to the protagonists friends and family, and I don’t want that shit. – 🙂 It makes me want a greenhouse full of beautiful flowers. But, sadly I don’t have a green thumb and everything would be dead. A greenhouse graveyard. eek

I will say that I can usually figure out who the killer is and why, but with this book, I really didn’t know until it was revealed!

There are recipes in the back of the book. I have tried one of them, and I’m going to try the other’s and do a post. I thought that was cute to include the vendors recipes!

Fraternize – Rachel Van Dyken

This is the first book I’ve read by Rachel Van Dyken. I read it in less than a day. No joke. I read really slowly (only since I’ve gotten older. I used to read incredibly fast – no more!) and I still flew through this book. I could not put it down. Like I was irritated that I needed to cook dinner for the family – Ha!

From the very beginning I liked Sanchez. I even posted on my instagram that I was going to be disappointed because I liked him so much, but I was sure this book was going to be a second-chance romance. Not that I could blame Emerson.  I mean, Miller is nothing to be sad about, but Sanchez is my man. He made me all sorts of sqiggly! Ha

I really liked Emerson. I liked the fact that she was funny and self depreciating sometimes, but she was 100% herself. I loved the fact that Rachel wrote her as a curvy bitch in a skinny world. And made her strong enough to flourish. Some authors try to write that story, but the “curvy girl” always ends up a whiner who is trying to lose weight. I love that this was not that story! And Kinsey! I love her! Sometimes the friends in books really get on my nerves, but Kinsey could be my buddy!

I grabbed #2 (Infraction) when I got this one from the library, and I can’t wait to start it! I am a new fan of Rachel – and sports romances it seems!

For real though, in real life, can you imagine how hard it must be to be with a pro athlete?! Women all over them? I wonder if teammates are really the assholes in real life that they seem to be in books and movies. There always is some douche who is trying to get players to cheat on their wives and/or girlfriends. I wonder how accurate that is. I couldn’t imagine being the dude who is pushing someone to cheat on their spouse/partner. That has got to be some bad karma mojo!

Lying in Wait – Ann Rule

Crime Files Vol. 17

Damn, I don’t know why I keep reading Ann Rule books! All’s it does is fuck me up and make me not trust anybody and think everyone is out to get me. Why? Because everyone is out to get me!! Aaaack

The Baby Seller- Fuck a bunch of that! The idea that a mothers love for her babies be used against her! No! Being a mom myself, I could only imagine how Geneva and Sally felt once they realized that things were going sideways :/. And poor Tracy! Seeing your momma shot in front of you and your baby brother taken. I can not imagine the damage done. People truly are crazy.

Secrets of the Amorous Pizza Man – Well, Al Baker was just a douchebag. That’s what that boils down to. Talk somebody into being a relationship with you, then kill them? What the fuck is the point of that?! Dumbass mother fucker. That is all I have to say about him!

A Road Trip to Murder- Except for Red Pederson,  everyone that Joey and Holly killed were innocent people and it was stupid senseless killings. I have mixed feelings for Red, because it seems that he sexually abused Joey when he was a kid, so I can’t feel bad about the fact that Joey ended up killing him and giving him what he deserved. For real.

Murderous Epitaph for the Beautiful Runaway – This story is so sad. Perhaps because I feel a sense of wanderlust sometimes. Britt just wanted to get out and explore the world. Doesn’t everyone dream of doing that at 18 (and 30, honestly)? Growing up in one place and wanting to experience life before too many responsibilities drag you under into adulthood. The whole thing is super sad that she had her whole life ahead of her, and some douche took it away because he wanted to get his dick wet.

Tracks of a Serial Rapist –  Speaking of douchebags who just want to get their dick wet. Here is another asshole who thinks that his cock is more important than any fucking things else. Too bad rapists don’t lose their cocks as punishment. I firmly believe that if you rape someone, chemical castration should be your punishment. 100%

Take a Lifer Home to Dinner…with Murder for Dessert –  This was the story of a career criminal that highlights how flawed and fucked up the justice system is. This dude couldn’t even be contained in jail. They kept letting this asshole out. “Take a lifer to dinner”. What the fuck? Sounds like a good program for people who deserve to be in jail and have been convicted and sentenced to life to get out and have some free dinner time. I hope whoever thought that shit up and implemented it in Washington jails got fired. Fuck a bunch of that nonsense.

I always say I’m not going to read anymore Ann Rule books. And then I see one in the library that I haven’t read, and I have to grab it. I’m a glutton for punishment, I guess!!!

Misadventures on the Night Shift – Lauren Rowe

I got this book from the library. I have heard of the Misadventures Series, and have even bought a couple, but I haven’t read any yet. When I saw it on the library shelf, I snagged it up.

I didn’t know they had stuff this filthy at the Library! I love it!!!

Abby is just minding her own damn business when Lucas Ford shows up and lets her be who she is!

That was my absolute favorite part of this book: Abby was able to be who she is. No more hiding. Lucas gave her an outlet to let her freakness out! He didn’t make her hide like other’s in her life, and he didn’t make her do anything she didn’t want to do. Most importantly he didn’t make her feel bad or dirty for what she wanted to do!

I think everybody has a little dirty in them that they feel like they need to hide from the world. Even if it’s just the kind of books they like to read. I don’t put all the filthy stuff I like to read (and I like some filthy stuff) on my facebook page. My grandma reads that shit! Ha. So, I really felt a kinship with Abby. And that scene with Camden, Abby, and Lucas together? Holy Fucking Hotness. That may actually be my favorite scene in any book ever. True Story!

I also like how Lauren hit on the downside of fame. I couldn’t be famous. I mean. Everybody looking at you and wanting a piece of you. Not knowing who you can trust. It’s hard enough just being a regular person to know who you can trust and who isn’t gonna go back and gossip about what you’ve told them. (Obviously I’m still holding on to some trust issues from high-school. hahaha.) Can you imagine if every conversation you have has the potential to end up on the internet (I was going to say “in a magazine”, which goes to show how old I am. ha) I really couldn’t do it.

Read the book. It’s awesome! I’m going to have to search for other Lauren Rowe stuff. I’m a fan! Like, I’ll actually buy this book for my bookshelf!

The Anatomy Murders – Lisa Rosner

The Anatomy Murders

The Anatomy Murders: Being the True and Spectacular History of Edinburgh’s Notorious Burke and Hare and of the Man of Science Who Abetted Them in the Commission of Their Most Heinous Crimes

This was another book that I got from the library! Again, dragging around in the “True Crime” section and came across it. I liked it, but there was a lot of information. There was some stuff that I just didn’t understand easily. A lot of information is written in accounts and just the differences in language from then to now had me slowing down and really having to pay attention. Because of that, it wasn’t an easy read and I found myself grabbing other books to read to relax rather than this one.

It does have a lot of medical procedures, especially in regards to autopsy’s and how they were done then. I really enjoyed that. It was interesting to read how things were done by the pioneers of the medical (surgical) occupation.

It does raise good points in how coming across bodies to “practice” on were and should have been procured. Even now, If you ask the majority of people if they would donate their bodies to science after they were gone for physicians to learn how to operate on living people, people are going to be against that. If that wasn’t the case, then graveyards wouldn’t be needed anymore.

I don’t know that I could actually do it. I mean, it’s a good thing. And, surgeons now need to learn how to operate and work on things like fine motor skills, but the idea creeps me out. Organ donation individually, I’m all for. But, just being like “Here’s my fat body.” to science, No.. And yet, the idea of a funeral/viewing with an open casket freaks me out. I mean, who is going to shave my face after I die so that I don’t have a beard in the casket? Nobody, that’s who. And, I read somewhere that the embalming practice adds 200-300lbs to your body. I’m already fat. Shit like that freaks me out. It shouldn’t, but it does.

Anyways, one of the points in the book to consider was if people who died indigent and in the care of the hospitals because they had no money, should be made to have their bodies taken to the medical schools for teaching purposes. I don’t know what the right answer to that is. I can’t say yes knowing how I feel about the idea of that for me, but on the other hand, again, surgeons need to learn the art somewhere.

I really found the murders in the book to be at the end of the list of what this book was really about. I mean, honestly. We didn’t really learn much. From the 16 victims, I would have expected more. But, really, who knows what really happened. What they do know was from someone who talked to be able to escape prosecution. People lie and make up stories all the time.

I was surprised at the brunt of the blame that Dr. Knox took. It seemed that in that day and time, everyone just kind of turned their heads, and Dr. Knox and his assistants did the same. But, it seemed to follow him around for the rest of his life. Had he asked any number of questions, maybe some of the victims wouldn’t have died. Or, maybe they would have just been taken to other anatomists. Who knows?
